HUNDREDS OF SENIOR CITIZENS ARRESTED AS TUESDAY’S PROTESTS GOT UNDERWAY.
Capitol Hill: As the protests got under way Tuesday morning, hundreds of senior citizens (Elders for Democracy Spring) were reportedly arrested for unlawful demonstration.
It was reported on social media that it took Capitol Police twice as long to begin making the arrests as it did on Monday. Later that day, protesters gathered at the Republican National Convention office (RNC) located at 3rd & First Street and shut out Paul Ryan’s press conference, as reporters attempted to get inside the building and they refused to open the door.
Energy Action coalition and oil Change International are collaborating with other environmental groups including SustainUs, Rootskeeper, Friends of the Earth, and Us Climate plan on a “Climate Justice Day” on Saturday when rallies will focus on climate related democracy issues and take part in Capitol sit in’s.
Saturday will also be the beginning of a three day event dubbed “Democracy Awakening” which will feature panels, film screenings, rallies, a march, mass direct action, and an advocacy day where activists will visit their Congressional Representative’s offices.
Other environmental groups supporting Democracy spring includes, Center for Biological Diversity, Elder’s Climate Action, human Earth Liberation, Interfaith moral Action On Climate, WildEarth Guardians, Greenpeace and 350.org.
