Police have arrested a Salem man following a brief foot pursuit after citizen calls in a suspicious person report to 9-1-1.
SALEM (NJ): Police say shortly after 11:00 a.m., a resident who lives in the 4100 block of Sunray Avenue South called police to report a suspicious vehicle that was sitting in her driveway. She the dispatch center that two men were out of the vehicle and looking at her home. She gave the dispatch center the vehicles tag number and a check on the vehicle’s tag by the dispatch center revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Albany. Officers were then dispatched to the area.
According to Salem Police officials, several officers responded to the call and as officers were arriving to the area, they observed two males who matched the description walking away. Officers caught up with the two males and made contact with them, however, they fled on foot onto Browning Avenue South and ultimately southbound on Kurth Street.
One of the males, later identified as Rudolph Murie, stopped running, turned towards the officers, and reached into his pockets and retrieved two large knives and began threatening the officers. Officers briefly spoke with Murie in an attempt to get him to surrender, however, Murie continued his threatening behavior.
According to a release by Salem Police Department, at this point, Murie made stabbing movements towards his neck with both knives causing lacerations to his neck. A Taser was deployed by Officers which was ineffective.
As the Taser was ineffective Officers then used bean bag rounds to try and get Murie to surrender. As the beanbag rounds were utilized, Murie turned and continued to attempt to flee. A Taser was once again utilized which allowed Officers to take Murie into custody without further incident.
Murie was transported to the Salem Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Following his release police say Murie was charged with a number of crimes related to this incident including Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, two counts of Felon in Possession of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Heroin, Possession, and Distribution of Methamphetamine and a Parole Violation warrant. Murie has been lodged at the Marion County Correctional Facility on these charges.
No Police Officers were harmed during the arrest and police are no longer searching for the second suspect.
