Wilmington getting off to a rocky start in the New Year as police investigate shooting

Wilmington is getting off to a rocky start in the New year as a 24 year-old man was shot in the 2700 block of W. 5th Street at around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday.

WILMINGTON (DE): Police say they were summoned to the 2700 block of W. 5th Street reference shots fired and when officers arrived, they found several spent shell casings within the block and two unoccupied motor vehicles that was struck by bullets. They did not find or receive any reports of victims.

Witnesses report that they observed a greay (SIC) Mercury motor vehicle fleeing the scene.

According to a press release provided by Wilmington police, a short time later, police on routine patrol spotted a vehicle matching the vehicle description in the parking lot of the Dash In gas station in the 1000 block of Delaware Avenue, with two occupants within. The vehicle sustained a flat tire and what appeared to be bullet strikes on the car.

Officers discovered the 28 year-old male driver suffering from a single gun shot wound to rear of his right shoulder. The front passenger was not injured. The victim was treated and released at St. Francis Hospital, officials said.

Police also say there was a SHOT SPOTTER notification at 11:58 pm from W. 3rd and Franklin Streets.

This is an on-going investigation.
