The victim was treated at the scene and transported to Christiana Hospital where he is in stable condition, according to police.
WILMINGTON (DE): A 24-year-old man was found shot in the leg during a traffic stop in Wilmington just before 9:00 p.m. He was treated at the scene and transported to Christiana Hospital and is listed in stable condition according to a release from the Wilmington Police Department.
According to officials, patrol officers were patrolling in the area of W. 4th and N. Orange Streets when they initiated a motor vehicle stop for ‘disregarding a red light’ violation. “Officers made contact with the operator of the vehicle who indicated that the front passenger had been shot”, said police.
Police say, during the investigation, it was determined that the shooting occurred in the 1000 block of N. Heald Street where there was a verbal dispute that erupted into a physical altercation between a female and the victim.
During the altercation the suspect displayed a firearm and fired one round toward the male victim, striking him in the leg. Detectives were able to develop a positive identification of the suspect, who was identified as Maya Lewis, 37, from Wilmington.
Detectives and the department’s street crimes unit located Lewis a short time later and she was taken into police custody without incident.
Lewis was charged with assault 1st degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. She was arraigned and committed to the Baylor’s Women’s Correctional Center after failing to post $70K cash bail.
