MIDDLETOWN (DE): It was an exciting day for 5-year-old Imani McKinney, who has been battling bone cancer for over a year.
McKinney has osteosarcoma which is a type of bone cancer. Osteosarcoma most often occurs in the long bones that make up the arms and legs, though it can occur in any bone. It tends to occur in children and young adults. Symptoms include localized bone pain and swelling. Treatment typically involves surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
After learning recently that McKinney’s bone cancer is terminal, her family shared with the hospital staff that one of her final wishes was to go to Disney World in a helicopter.
Through the collaborative efforts of many, the Delaware State Police was able to make part of Imani’s wish come true and provide a smile filled and memorable day and for a special little girl and her family.
On Thursday, August 27, 2020, Troopers provided Imani and her family a police escort from their residence in New Castle, DE, to Summit Aviation, located in Middletown.
Imani and her family were met with a warm welcome by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, the DSTA, and uniformed Troopers. Imani was provided a tour of the airport hangar and sat inside a Delaware State Police helicopter. The DSTA provided lunch, and Imani received several gifts.
