More nightmares are coming to the Delaware Memorial Bridge as more construction will begin September 8, 2020, the Delaware River & Bay Authority says.
NEW CASTLE (DE): The DRBA contractor, J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, PA, will begin the Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) deck overlay pilot construction project on the New Jersey-bound Span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge beginning September 8, 2020 and continuing through October 9, 2020.
Two lanes will be closed to traffic throughout the overlay placement period – with an additional third lane shut down on occasions during the overnight hours. The traveling public should expect traffic congestion and delays heading into New Jersey through early October
Wednesday, September 9 – Sunday, September 20: Right two lanes closed throughout this time period, with a third adjacent lane closed at nights on occasions during this time period mostly between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The third lane closure is required for the UHPC overlay material to be poured.
Monday, September 21 – Wednesday, September 30: Left two lanes closed throughout this time, with a third adjacent lane closed on occasions during this time period mostly between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The third lane closure is required for the UHPC overlay material to be poured.
Thursday, October 1 – Friday October 9: Single lane closures with night time double lane closures for finishing work on the UHPC deck surface, including lane markings.
During the scheduled work, motorists should expect delays heading northbound into New Jersey. The construction schedule may vary due to inclement weather. Commuters and travelers are urged to be careful and stay alert in and around construction zones, obey posted speed limits, and plan for some extra time during rush hour periods.
The bridge deck of the New Jersey-bound span is more than 50 years old and needs substantial repair and rehabilitation. The cost of the UHPC deck pilot project is $6.2 million.
