Southbound South College Ave (DE 896) was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
NEWARK (DE): A 59-year-old bicyclist from Newark is dead today after being struck by an E-350 Ford van just before 10:00 Tuesday morning.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit was on the scene investigating the accident on South College Avenue just south of Corporate Blvd.
“A Ford E350 van was traveling southbound South College Ave (DE 896) in the right through lane just south of Corporate Boulevard.,” said police spokesman Jason Hatchell. “The Ford merged into the right turn lane directly in the path of the bicyclist.”
The Ford attempted to avoid the collision, but the front on the van struck the rear of the bicycle. The bicyclist was subsequently ejected., Hatchell said.
Hatchell also said that the bicyclist, a 59-year-old male from Newark, was flown to Christiana Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Police identified the victim as 59-year-old Robert Frederick of Newark, DE.
The operator of the van, a 44-year-old male from Newark, DE was properly restrained and did not sustain injuries.
