Delaware State Police have identified the names of the of the two individuals who died in a crash on September 18, 2020, on eastbound Kirkwood Highway (Rt. 2) east of Rt. 41, Wilmington, as 52 year-old Arthur Bell Jr. of Bear, DE and 62 year-old Lottie Lee of Wilmington, DE.
WILMINGTON (DE): Two people are dead after a head-on collision on Kirkwood Highway Friday evening that backed up traffic for miles as police and first responders worked the crash scene.
Delaware State Police say the accident occurred on Kirkwood highway just east of Rte 41 around 9:00 P.M Friday.
Police say a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer was traveling westbound on Kirkwood Highway (Rt.2) east of Rt. 41, and crossed over the median into the eastbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway.
As the Blazer crossed the median, police say it drove directly into the path of a 2018 Jeep Renegade that was traveling in the center lane of eastbound Kirkwood Highway.
After the Blazer struck the front of the Jeep, both occupants of their vehicles became entrapped and had to be extricated by Cranston Heights Fire Fighters.
The operator of the Blazer, a 52 year-old male from Bear, was properly restrained and was transported to the Trauma Center at Christiana Hospital by Mill Creek Fire Company after being treated by New Castle County Paramedics.
“The patient suffered significant injuries to the upper and lower extremities, as well as possible internal injuries.,” according to New Castle County Paramedics. His condition was originally critical at the scene but changed to stable condition at time of transport.
Police say he was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the trauma center at Christiana Hospital.
The operator of the Jeep, a 62 year-old female from of Wilmington, was properly restrained and transported to the Trauma Center at Christiana Hospital by Belvedere Fire Company in critical condition after being treated for life threatening injuries by New Castle County Paramedics.
She was also pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the trauma center at Christiana Hospital., police said.
Eastbound Kirkwood Highway was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
Belvedere, Elsemere, and Mill Creek Fire Companies assisted with the crash scene.
