Motor vehicle crash on Kirkwood Hywy involving overturned oil tanker seriously injures one person

Police say Kirkwood Highway is closed in both directions and advised motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

WILMINGTON (DE): The Delaware State Police are currently on scene investigating a roll-over crash involving an oil tanker with a fuel spill that occurred at approximately 6:09 a.m. this morning.

New Castle County Paramedics, along with rescue crews from Mill Creek Fire Company, surrounding Hazmat Units, and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control responded to the scene.

Police say the accident occurred on Kirkwood Highway at Farrand Drive in Wilmington.

According to New Castle County Paramedics, “There was one patient requiring advanced life support care.”

Medics say, the patient, an adult male, was treated on the scene for chest injuries, as well as left sided extremity injuries. The patient was then transported to Christiana Care Hospital Emergency Room via ambulance from Mill Creek Fire Company in stable condition during.

It’s unknown what the cause of the crash was and Delaware State Police are still investigating the crash.
