NEW CASTLE (DE): Police are investigating after officers found a man and a toddler in a car suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police say the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Rosegate community.
Officers found the two victims in the unit block of Rose Lane after being dispatched to the area for a report of a shooting.
“When the officers arrived, they found a 23-year-old man and his 9-month-old son both suffering from gunshot wounds.,” said police spokesman Michel Eckerd. “Both victims were transported to a local area hospital.
The toddler is listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the upper body. His father is also being treated for a gunshot wound to the lower torso., Eckerd said.
Detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police Criminal Investigations Unit arrived on scene and assumed the investigation. The detectives learned that the victim and his two sons were seated in a parked vehicle on Rose Lane, when the vehicle was struck multiple times by gunfire. A two-year-old boy who was also in the vehicle was not struck.
