According to police, officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle in the area of Rosemont Ave and East 24th Street in the City of Wilmington.
NEW CASTLE (DE): 30-year-old Lymond Moses of Bear is dead after being shot by two New Castle County Police officers during a suspicious vehicle investigation. It’s the first police-involved shooting of the New Year.
New Castle County Police identified the victim in a Wednesday evening news release. He was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Police would not identify the officers involved in the shooting other than their length of time on the police force.
“The patrol officers involved, a 10-year veteran and a 3-year veteran, have both been placed on administrative leave per New Castle County Division of Police Policy.,” said police spokesman Michel Eckerd.
Police have not released any details of the incident citing the investigation is “still very active” and was being conducted by detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police, Criminal Investigation Unit, members of the Professional Standards Unit, and the Delaware Department of Justice, Office of Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust.
New Castle County Police Chief Colonel Vaughn M. Bond, Jr. reflected on the first officer-involved shooting of the New Year.
“The events of this morning are tragic as the lives of our officers and the Moses family have been forever altered. I can assure those we serve that we are committed to conducting a thorough and exhaustive investigation to determine exactly what occurred during the officers interactions with Mr. Moses.”
Police say the shooting occurred Wednesday morning around 1:00 a.m. in the area of Rosemont Ave and East 24th Street in Wilmington’s Riverside neighborhood.
According to police, officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle in the area of Rosemont Ave and East 24th Street in the City of Wilmington. When the officers began approaching the vehicle, it sped off away from them towards a dead end street. It was then that police say the vehicle, upon making a U-turn at the dead end, began accelerating at the officers at a high rate of speed.
According to police spokesman, Michel Eckerd, “The officers subsequently discharged their firearms and struck the driver. The officers immediately rendered first aid and were later assisted by other emergency medical personnel. However, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.”
