Police say the joint traffic initiative took place in the Newark area after numerous incidents involving illegal street racing.
NEWARK (DE) 02/01/21: Delaware State Police have made numerous arrests during a two month traffic initiative that was aimed at aggressive driving, speeding, and dangerous moving violations, according to a news release.
Delaware State Police and Newark Police Department were the only two agencies that were involved in the operation which was launched after numerous incidents involving illegal street racing.
Police say the two-month initiative resulted in 37 speeding citations with 4 warnings, 1 driving under the influence arrest, 1 seatbelt violation, 1 cell phone violation, 1 red-light violation, 1 stop sign violation, 1 aggressive driver and 73 other traffic arrests. The operation also yielded 6 drug arrests including 3 felony arrests, and 1 other criminal arrest.
The initiative was launched after several racing incidents in the Newark area, police said.
“The Delaware State Police and the Newark Police Department will continue their efforts to put a stop to illegal street racing and deter others from being a part of such illegal activity. ,” Said police spokesman Jason Hatchel. “Future initiatives are planned throughout the rest of the year.”
The traffic initiative comes months following the death of a 16-Year-Old Newark teen who was watching a drag race on Fashion Center Blvd in Newark back in September 2020. The teen was struck by a A 2008 Infiniti G35. Two others were also injured during the crash.
