DELDOT Crews locate fatal wreck during guardrail inspection Thursday

The 65-year-old male operator of Chester, PA, was located in the vehicle at the time of the investigation and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

WILMINGTON (DE) BY DIGITAL STAFF: Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash after a DELDOT maintenance crew located an overturned vehicle in the Fox Point area with a deceased 65-year-old male operator in it.

Police say the discovery came Thursday just after 2:00 p.m. by DELDOT personnel who were working on I-495 in the area of Edgemoor Road. Police say the crew was inspecting guardrails in the area when the discovery was made.

The crew noticed damage to a section of guardrail on the right side of northbound I-495 and after further inspection, discovered a 2009 Ford F-150 approximately 200-300 feet off the roadway and down a steep embankment in the area of the damaged guardrail. After the discovery, the crew immediately contacted Police.

Now police say the accident happened almost eight days ago on February 17, 2021. Investigators say around 11:53 p.m., the Ford was traveling northbound on I-495 in the area of Edgemoor Road but for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway and the front collided with the guardrail.  After impact, the Ford traveled down a steep embankment and overturned multiple times before coming to rest in an area of overbrown brush.

The 65-year-old male operator of Chester, PA, was located in the vehicle at the time of the investigation and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin., police say.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this collision.
