DOVER (DE) BY DIGITAL STAFF: Could you imagine Delaware making history once again? Well, it did after announcing the idea of a digital drivers license and id card back in 2015, and making the idea a reality in 2021.

The idea came back in 2015 after the Senate authorized the Division of Motor Vehicles to study and consider employing digital licenses for motorists. Delaware’s DMV Director at the time, Jennifer Cohan told the News Journal, “As electronic certificates are the wave of the future, Delaware would like to go first”

Now, almost five years later, the division of motor vehicles is launching the Mobile Id app for Delaware residents as Digital Solution Provides a Convenient and Secure Way to Manage Identity.

“The app allows Delaware’s 800,000+ licensed drivers and ID cardholders to use their smartphones as a form of ID, transforming the way residents manage their identity.,” Said DMV Spokesperson Louis Holt. “After several years of extensive pilot testing, Mobile ID is newly available to the public.”

“Mobile ID is also a significant step forward in the fight against identity theft due to several security features. Specifically, it requires users to capture and upload their physical ID as well as a live selfie to compare against the individual’s file with the Delaware DMV. After approval, users unlock the app using their face or fingerprints, ensuring only they can access their ID.,” Holt said.

Holt added that “In addition to safeguards to open the app, Mobile ID offers privacy control options that allow the user to verify they are of legal age while hiding unnecessary information such as the user’s address.”

Prove your identity and pay for your purchase from the same device at participating locations. ID check with barcode scanning is quick and easy – and contactless. Note: It is required by law to present a physical driver license when requested.

Safer than carrying your ID in your wallet, the Mobile ID app is secure, using FaceID or TouchID. Mobile ID puts you in control by letting you decide what information you share.

Your Mobile ID can be checked without your phone leaving your hand, clean and simple. Seamless information sharing, on your terms.

While going cardless may be a good thing, you’ll still need to carry that piece of plastic as Holt cautioned that “by law, one is still required to carry their physical credential as applicable for age and identity verification.”

“Mobile ID has additional benefits that a physical identification card simply does not have, and Delaware is proud to be one of the first states to pilot this technology,” said Jana Simpler, Director of the Delaware DMV. “We are happy to be able to provide this voluntary option to our customers.”
