Two people riding on a motorcycle are dead after police say a vehicle tried to pass another vehicle and struck the motorcycle, killing both of it’s riders.
TOWNSEND (DE) BY DIGITAL STAFF: Delaware State Police say they are investigating a motorcycle crash that killed two people Monday night on Green Giant Road in Middletown.
Police say the accident happened just before 9:30 p.m. near the intersection at Summit Bridge Road and Green Giant Road.
A 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle was being operated by 68-year-old Joseph Sturek of Middletown and his passenger, 63-year-old Deborah Sturek also of Middletown., police said.
Police identified the victims Wednesday afternoon.
The motorcycle was traveling westbound on Green Giant Road when it was struck by a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country which was traveling eastbound on Green Giant Road heading in the direction of the intersection with Summit Bridge Road.
Police said the Chrysler crossed over the solid, double yellow line to pass another uninvolved vehicle, and struck the front of the Harley Davidson.
Both the operator and passenger were ejected from the motorcycle. The 68-year-old male operator of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased at the scene and his passenger, a 63-year-old female was transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.
The 18-year-old male operator of the Chrysler was properly restrained and did not sustain any injuries. Impairment is not considered a factor.
Green Giant Road between Wiggins Mill Road and Summit Bridge Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The investigation into this collision is ongoing.
The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit.
