The crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. on Wilmington Road and Baldt Avenue near old New Castle.
NEW CASTLE (DE) BY DIGITAL STAFF: New Castle City Police are investigating after a vehicle crashed into a moving freight train near Old New Castle.
The crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. on Wilmington Road and Baldt Avenue.
Goodwill Fire Company arrived on the scene and found a single vehicle heavily damaged with it’s sole occupant trapped.
Fire personnel including Wilmington Manor Fire Company and Five Points Fire Company, worked for ten minutes to free the victim using the Jaws of Life.
Once freed from the vehicle, the victim was treated at the scene by Goodwill Fire Company EMS and New Castle County Paramedics before being air-lifted by Delaware State Police Aviation (Trooper 4) with internal injuries to Christiana Hospital.
New Castle County Paramedics say the victim was in serious condition at the time of transport.
New Castle City Police confirm that the driver is a 19-Year-Old Wilmington man.
“A 19 year old Wilmington man was south bound on Wilmington Road., Said New Castle City Police spokeswoman Tina Shughart. “The vehicle crashed into the side of a train.”
The investigation is being conducted by the New Castle County Traffic Services Unit which investigates all major crashes that involve serious injuries and fatal crashes in county jurisdictions. The NTSB is also investigating.
