Police say, just after midnight Tuesday, patrol officers were dispatched to a residence in the unit block of Ethan Allen Court for a report of a disturbance, but while officers were on the way, a second call was received reporting a shooting at the same residence.
As officers evaluated and secured the scene, officers located a male in the residence suffering from a gunshot wound, however, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second male victim at the residence was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the hand. Officers rendered medical aid and he was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Police believe the incident is an altercation between people known to each other within the residence, and there is no known threat to the community.
Police say detectives determined that the shooting resulted from an altercation between two roommates.
During the course of the altercation, one of the roommates, Desmond Elliott, 26, introduced a handgun in which he shot his roommate, James Harland, 35, who was shot multiple times by Elliott and died from his injuries.
“During the course of the altercation between Elliott and Harland, Elliott also suffered a gunshot wound to the wrist and was admitted to an area hospital.,” said police spokesman Andrew Rubin.
Elliott was charged today by Newark Police with Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (2 counts), and Receiving a Stolen Firearm.
Elliott appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video from his hospital bed. He was released on $43,000 unsecured bail.
