Two kids who were riding bikes in Dewey Beach without helmets hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday night in Dewey Beach.
DEWEY BEACH (DE) BY DIGITAL STAFF: Delaware State Police say two juveniles on bicycles were struck by a vehicle in Dewey Beach Tuesday night. Police say, both of the victims were transported to a local area hospital with one of the victims in critical condition and the other with minor injuries.
The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. in the area of St. louis Street and Coastal Highway Tuesday July 6, 2021., police said.
Police and first responders responded to the scene shortly after the crash and determined that a 2010 Ford Explorer had struck two juvenile bicyclists.
“The preliminary investigation has revealed the bicyclists attempted to cross the roadway and traveled into the path of the Ford Explorer.,” Said Delaware State Police spokeswoman Heather pepper. “The vehicle was unable to avoid the collision and the bicyclists were struck within the left travel lane of Coastal Highway.”
Pepper said neither of the bicyclists were wearing helmets.
The 13-year-old female bicyclist from Wilmington was not wearing a helmet and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and the 14-year-old female bicyclist from Hockessin was not wearing a helmet and was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. The 70-year-old operator from Bethany Beach was uninjured.
The collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Any witness to this collision should contact Sgt. Nick DeMalto by calling (302) 703-3269.
Coastal Highway in the area of the collision was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
