Man shot multiple times Tuesday night near New Castle identified

NEW CASTLE (DE) BY DIGITAL STAFF: New Castle County Police are investigating a homicide after a man was found lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds Tuesday night.

The victim was identified Thursday as 38-year-old Ernest Staples.

Police say officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Freedom Trail near New Castle around 10:30 p.m. for a report of gunshots in the area.

Arriving officers found a 38-Year-Old man lying in the roadway with gunshot wounds to his upper body. “The officers administered First-Aid however the efforts were unsuccessful, and the subject was pronounced deceased.,” said police spokesman Michel Eckerd.

Police released no other information about the shooting and said the investigation is still in the early stages and additional updates will be provided as soon as the information becomes available.

“I can assure Mr. Staples’ family that the New Castle County Division of Police is making every effort to find the person(s) responsible for taking his life.”, stated Colonel Vaughn M. Bond, Jr. “We can’t do this alone therefore we are asking our community partners to come forward with any information you may have. We understand the reluctance to get involved; however, keep in mind you can provide information anonymously.”

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit is investigating the homicide and are asking anyone with any information to please come forward.
