WILMINGTON (DE) BY GEORGE SHEA: As COVID-19 reaches an all time high in Delaware, overwhelming hospitals and healthcare workers, Governor John Carney is pleading with businesses to “step up to the plate” and do what needs to be done.

“Residents really need to understand that the Omicron variant is very very contagious. Hopefully, it doesn’t bring with it as serious sickness but we’ll see but we need to get everybody recognizing that if you’re not wearing your mask in in public places, indoor public places, you’re putting yourselves and and others at risk.,” said Governor John Carney at his December 30, 2021 COVID-19 Press briefing.

Carney added, “I hear all the time including conversations I had with business leaders in our state this morning. Uh that there’s so much spread among people that don’t know they’re carrying the virus because they’re not symptomatic. And so it’s important that you take the extra precaution by wearing a mask indoors in public. Protect those employees of those facilities. I was in my Wawa this morning. They were commenting about eighty percent of the people that come and go are wearing their masks. All their employees are are wearing their mask and they’ve had minimal minimal outbreak there but still you know they take a person or two down and they’re not able to fill the shifts. And that’s just one small example. The hospitals are are experiencing that in a very more serious way.”

“Businesses, again, I mentioned talking to the business leaders. We need to protect your workers and customers. So, we’re encouraging you to require masks. We think you requiring a mask is a better way to get the the objective and we understand that you know better than we do your operational needs. We’re two years into this and we expect business leaders to to step up and and do what has to be done. As we are in the state, we do have a mask mandate for all state, public facilities, public transportation, hospitals, long term care facilities, health care facilities are subject to that mask mandate. Our our partner at the University of Delaware, Delaware State University Uh have mask mandates as well and so we need private businesses to step up to the plate as well.”
