Comprehensive national data isn’t available because the FBI’s crime reporting system doesn’t track carjackings but it’s safe to say that Delaware is experiencing an uptick in the violent crime.

NEW CASTLE (DE) BY DIGITAL STAFF: Delaware State Police are investigating a carjacking at a New Castle area Wawa and an attempted carjacking at a Claymont area Wawa that occurred this weekend.

Police say the first carjacking occurred at approximately 6:14 p.m., Friday, January 21, 2022, at the gas pump at the Beaver Brook Plaza Wawa in New Castle. Police say a 63-year-old woman parked her black 2011 Chevrolet Malibu at the gas pump and was outside of her vehicle when three suspects who were described as black males wearing ski masks, ran up to her.

One of the suspects demanded her vehicle in which she complied and the suspects fled in the stolen Malibu police said. The victim was not injured during the incident.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact Corporal Abrenica of Troop 2 by calling 302-834-2620. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware crime stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or via the internet at http://www.delaware.crimestoppers.com

Then on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at approximately 5:20 a.m., police were called to the parking lot of the Philadelphia Pike Wawa in Claymont.

Police say two male suspects approached a 56-year-old woman and a 72-year-old woman on both sides of the vehicle while sitting inside of their car in the parking lot.

The suspects opened the vehicle doors and began demanding the victims to exit the car, police said. The victims were slow to comply with the suspects’ demands causing one of the suspects to strike the 56-year-old woman in the back of the head with a handgun while another suspect physically assaulted the 72-year-old woman, police said.

However, instead of taking their car, both suspects then ran to a silver Mazda 3 in the parking lot and fled the scene.

The suspects were described as two black males, approximately 15-25 years old, wearing all dark clothing. There are no surveillance images available at this time.

The 56-year-old victim was treated and released from an area hospital for injuries to the head.

Comprehensive national data isn’t available because the FBI’s crime reporting system doesn’t track carjackings but it’s safe to say that Delaware is experiencing an uptick in carjackings. So far this year, State Police have 5 carjackings that are under investigation. In 2021, state police investigated 19 carjackings within their jurisdiction. We’re working on gathering information from other law enforcement agencies to get a better picture.
