Teen charged with murder after stabbing girlfriend’s step dad in Mayview Manor

Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit were able to locate the suspect at his residence and take him into custody without incident.

NEW CASTLE (DE) DNTV: A Teen has been arrested in the stabbing death of his girlfriend’s step dad that police say happened on Monday July 11, 2022 in the Mayview Manor community.

Police say the officers responded to the Mayview home on Sixth Street just before 12:30 a.m. and found 33-year-old Matthew Hessey on the front step area of the residence suffering from an apparent stab wound to the torso. Police say Matthew was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after.

Detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police Criminal Investigations Unit arrived at the scene and assumed the investigation. The detectives were able to develop a 17-year-old male as a suspect. The juvenile is the boyfriend of Matthew’s girlfriend’s daughter., police said in a news release.

The juvenile was transported to police headquarters where he was charged with one count of felony Murder First Degree, one count of felony Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, and one count of felony Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and held in lieu of $1 million dollars cash bail.

“My thoughts are with the family during this tragic and very difficult time.” stated Colonel Joseph Bloch, Chief of Police, “I would also like to commend our Criminal Investigation Unit for gathering enough evidence to take the suspect into custody so quickly, bringing some sense of closure to the family.”
