Update 09/15/22: A Georgetown Royal Farms clerk who was beaten with a baseball bat on Wednesday September 07, 2022 has died Delaware State Police said in an updated news release. Police identified the victim on Thursday September 15, 2022, as Paul McCarter, 38, of Georgetown. Carter died at the hospital on Tuesday September 13, 2022.
Police say, the suspect, Kevin Shorter, 24, of Georgetown, was initially arrested for attempted murder and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution however, because the victim died from his injuries, upgraded charges for the suspect are pending at this time.
“The suspect, Kevin Shorter, 24, of Georgetown, was initially arrested for attempted murder and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on September 10, 2022. On September 13, 2022, the victim succumbed to his injuries. Upgraded charges for the suspect are pending at this time.,” Said Delaware State Police spokeswoman India Sturgis.
GEORGETOWN (DE) DNTV: A Royal Farms clerk is fighting for his life after Delaware State Police say a 24-year-old Georgetown man walked into the store and began beating him with a baseball bat as he worked on Wednesday night September 07, 2022.
According to a news release, at approximately 9:53 p.m., Georgetown Police Department responded to the Royal Farms, located at 20579 DuPont Boulevard, in reference to an assault complaint. The investigation revealed that the victim, a 38-year-old male from Georgetown, was assaulted by an unknown male with a baseball bat inside the convenience store.
Police say, the victim, who sustained severe injuries, was transported to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Two days later on Saturday September 10, 2022, police arrested Kevin Shorter, 24, of Georgetown, Delaware. Troopers located Shorter in the Rehoboth Beach area and took him into custody without incident. Through investigative means, detectives determined Kevin Shorter was the suspect. Shorter was transported back to Troop 7 and charged with Attempted First Degree Murder (Felony), and Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Felony).
Shorter was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $155,000.00 cash bond.
