Delaware State Police are investigating the discharge of a gun inside the Appoquinimink High School that occurred Monday night during a high school basketball game.
MIDDLETOWN, DE (DNTV):Delaware State Police have arrested the 1-Year-Old Juvenile who had an active warrant for his arrest in relation to this incident.
State Police say, the 16-year-old turned himself in to detectives at Troop 2, where he was charged with Rioting (Felony), Assault Third Degree, Conspiracy Third Degree, and Disorderly Conduct.
The teen was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on his own recognizance. He was ordered to have no contact with the codefendants, victim, and Appoquinimink High School, and he was forbidden from attending future Appoquinimink School District sporting events.
Police say on February 6, 2023, at approximately 7:16 p.m., troopers responded to the Appoquinimink High School, located at 1080 Bunker Hill Road, Middletown, for a report of a shot fired.
Two troopers who were working extra duty for a basketball game at the school responded to a hallway outside of the gymnasium where a fight had just occurred., police said in an updated news release.
A further investigation revealed that a handgun fell to the ground during a large fight. The gun, police said, was stepped on during the physical altercation causing the gun to discharge and strike a wall. Subsequently, the handgun was recovered in the hallway and there were no injuries as a result of the discharged firearm.
The suspects were last observed running from the school towards the football stadium. The number of suspects and their involvement is still being determined.
Thursday February 9, 2023, police arrested Demetrius Lyn-Brown, 20, from Bear, DE, and a 15-year-old juvenile male of Middletown, DE in connection with the incident.
Police say they used investigative measures to identify the four suspects involved and obtained warrants for their arrest.
“On February 9,2023 Demetrius Lyn-Brown and the 15-year-old juvenile were located at their residences and taken into custody without incident.,” Said police spokesman Jason Hatchell. “The 14-year-old juvenile male of Middletown, DE who dropped the gun during the incident was located hiding at a residence in Pottstown, PA. With the assistance of the Pottstown Police Department, the juvenile was taken into custody and is awaiting extradition back to Delaware to be charged.
The fourth suspect, a 16-year-old juvenile male from Middletown, DE has an active warrant for his arrest.”
Lyn-Brown was charged with Rioting (Felony), Assault Third Degree, Conspiracy Third Degree, and Disorderly Conduct.
Lyn-Brown was arraigned in the Justice of the Court #2 and released on a $5,100 unsecured bond. He received a No Contact Order with the Appoquinimink District Schools.
The 15-Year-Old was charged with Rioting (Felony), Assault Third Degree, Conspiracy Third Degree, and Disorderly Conduct.
The 15-year-old juvenile was arraigned in the Justice of the Court #2 and released without a bond to a guardian. He received a No Contact Order for any of Appoquinimink’s sporting events.
Upon the 14-year-old juvenile’s extradition to Delaware, he will be charged with Possession of a Firearm by Person Prohibited (Felony)- 2 counts, Possession of a Firearm in a Safe School Zone (Felony), and Assault Third Degree.
None of the suspects involved in the incident attend Appoquinimink High School.
